No. The November 2023 circular that lifted risk weights on consumer credit to 125% for banks and NBFCs expressly excluded vehicle loans, alongside housing, education and gold-backed lending. There is no EV-specific capital charge in Indian regulation. Any premium you are quoted is a commercial judgement about recovery, which means it is open to evidence and to negotiation in a way a regulatory requirement would not be.

Will a battery warranty actually change my loan terms?

It can, provided it survives the things a lender cares about. Product warranties running at least as long as the loan are one of the six de-risking measures the sector report identifies. Check three clauses before you rely on it: whether the cover transfers to a subsequent owner, whether commercial duty cycles and routine fast charging void it, and what capacity threshold triggers a claim. A warranty that lapses on sale is worth nothing to the party lending against the asset.

The caution is timing: the scheme runs to 31 March 2028, but incentive windows differ by vehicle category and some have already closed, so verify the live position for your exact class before the figure goes into a credit file.

If nobody can quote a residual value, should I lease instead of borrowing?

Leasing moves the residual exposure to the lessor, who prices it into the rental and absorbs it across a portfolio. It is most attractive when you cannot secure a manufacturer buy-back and the model you want has no resale history. It is least attractive when you can produce the contracts, telematics evidence and warranty cover that let a lender price the asset properly. Work the comparison on your own numbers rather than on the principle.
